Drainpipes

Effective drainage from the roof is impossible without a properly selected pipe. It is the downpipes that are responsible for draining water down and protecting the building from moisture. The condition of the facade, the curb and the foundation depends on their quality.

The gutters on the facade play a particularly important role. They are constantly exposed to rain, wind and temperature changes. Therefore, they must be strong, airtight and resistant to corrosion.

The company "Akveduk" manufactures premium gutter systems. Each gutter pipe is designed for stable operation in any season and a long service life.

What is a downpipe and what function does it perform?

A downspout is a vertical element of the system that carries water from a gutter to the ground or drain. It is part of the gutter riser and works in conjunction with the downspout and elbows.

The main function is the controlled drainage of rainwater without splashing. This protects the facade from leaks and prevents the destruction of the building's foundation.

If the system is selected correctly, the downspout works without overloading even during rain. If not, water overflows, leaks appear, and wet areas near the foundation.

That is why gutter pipes are not just an addition, but a key element of the entire system.

What are the types of drainpipes by material?

Modern gutters are made of various materials. The most common are plastic and metal. The choice depends on operating conditions, budget, and durability requirements.

Comparison of drainpipe materials:

Material Benefits Disadvantages Where is it most commonly used?
Plastic
  • light weight
  • quiet during the rain
  • easy installation
  • not subject to corrosion
Less strength, temperature sensitivity Private houses
Metal
  • high strength
  • load resistance
  • keeps its shape well
  • durability
Higher price, greater weight Cottages, commercial buildings
Galvanized steel
  • affordable price
  • basic corrosion protection
Limited resource without additional coverage Standard systems

Plastic solutions are suitable for private homes with a low load. They are quickly installed and do not require complex maintenance.

If you need reliability, you should choose metal gutters. They better withstand the load from water, snow, and ice, and also work stably during temperature changes.

Galvanized downpipe is a compromise between price and durability. It is suitable for standard operating conditions and provides a basic level of protection.

Metal and galvanized drainpipes

Metal solutions are suitable for large buildings and complex roofs. They can withstand significant volumes of water and do not deform over time, even under prolonged loads.

Galvanizing creates a protective layer that slows down corrosion. Thanks to this, galvanized gutter pipes last longer and maintain their appearance.

Additionally, a polymer coating is often used. It increases resistance to ultraviolet light, scratches and moisture. Such pipes look neat and blend better with the facade.

When planning drainage systems for any construction project, it is important to consider the quality of the material. Cheap options can lose their protective properties faster and require replacement sooner than expected.

How to choose the diameter of a drainpipe

The diameter of the pipe determines its throughput. The larger the roof area, the larger the diameter required for stable water drainage. This directly affects the efficiency of the entire system.

Main selection factors:

  • roof area: determines the volume of water that the system must drain during rain;
  • precipitation intensity: affects peak load, especially during snowmelt, downpours and prolonged rains;
  • the number of gutter risers: the more there are, the more evenly the load is distributed across the system.

Additionally, it is worth considering the shape of the roof and the length of the slopes. This determines the rate of water accumulation and the required pipe capacity.

If these parameters are ignored, the system will operate with overload. The water will not have time to drain and will overflow over the edge of the gutter. This will cause the facade and the blind area to become wet.

Before purchasing downspouts, it is important to make a basic load calculation. This allows you to avoid mistakes even at the design stage.

Popular diameters: 75, 90, 100, 120 and 150 mm

The most common sizes are selected for different types of buildings and load levels.

  • Drain pipe 75 mmFor small structures, sheds and outbuildings.
  • Drain pipe 90 mmOptimal for private houses of medium size.
  • Drain pipe 100. A universal option for most cottages.
  • Pipe 120-150 mmFor large roof areas, complex roofs and commercial properties.

In many projects, the 100 mm downpipe is used as standard. It provides a balance between throughput and system cost.

The cost also depends on the size. For example, the price of a downspout increases with the diameter and thickness of the material. Similarly, the total price of a downspout for different system configurations is formed.

It should be noted that before buying a downspout, it is worth considering not only the budget. Compatibility with gutters, fittings, and type of installation are also important.

On average, the price of gutter pipes depends on a number of the following components:

  • material;
  • steel thickness;
  • type of coating.

For example, the price of a metal gutter will be higher, but its service life is also much longer, which reduces costs in the long run.

The Ukrainian-Finnish joint venture "Akveduk" emphasizes: correctly selected gutters are not an expense, but an investment in protecting the house. They ensure stable drainage and preserve the facade and foundation in the long term.
